A police media spokesperson said they were called to Bledisloe St in Levin on Thursday.
Some residents have been asked to leave their homes as a precaution, police said.
A Horowhenua District Council spokesperson confirmed that some residents are being accommodated at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō Community Centre & Library.
Police said it was a self-harm incident.
