Weather: Another day of heavy rain, strong wind and thunderstorms – صحيفة الصوت

A severe weather watch is in place for parts of the central and southern North Island on Thursday as an unsettled northwesterly flow makes its way across the motu.

MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for Bay of Plenty east of Whakatāne, Tongariro National Park, Mt Taranaki, Horowhenua to Wellington and the Tararua Range.

Periods of heavy rain could strike those areas throughout Thursday.

In the Bay of Plenty, thunderstorms and heavy rain were possible, especially about the ranges, between 8am and 8pm.

In Tongariro National Park, thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon with periods of heavy rain forecast between 6am and 6pm.

The situation is the same at Mt Taranaki between 2am Thursday and 5pm, while the warning period for Horowhenua to Wellington and the Tararua Range is between 7am and 10pm.

It’s set to be a rainy end to the week in the North Island’s main centres. Auckland should expect to see some rain and northerlies on Thursday morning, with thunderstorms possible.

Wellington is also expected to see heavy rain and strong winds, pushing through into the weekend.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible for areas in the central and lower North Island.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible for areas in the central and lower North Island.

Further South, Christchurch will get a slight reprieve from the wet weather as rain eases off. Scattered rain is expected on Thursday and a cloudy Friday is forecast.

This comes as the city still recovers from record-breaking rain that nearly overwhelmed its flood defence system earlier this week.

Meanwhile, a heavy rain watch for Clutha in the South Island was lifted at 8pm on Wednesday.

A further update will be issued at 10am.

People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made or further areas added.
