Honestly, this week the most pressing fashion consideration on our minds has been: is it an umbrella day, a trench coat day, or both?

But across the globe, celebrities on fashion’s front line have been pondering the opposite quandary – what to wear when it’s earth-meltingly hot?

Because the grass is always greener (and drier), we’ve had fun living vicariously through A-listers as they unbutton their shirts, reached for colours brighter than the sun and saved their makeup for a less sweaty day.

Pull up a chair and admire these six stellar celebrity outfits from the week just gone, with not an umbrella or raincoat in sight.

Best Ken doll slash action figure

Give me Ryan Gosling cosplaying a Ken doll on The Gray Man press tour as an example of method acting over Jared Leto sending dead rodents to his colleagues anytime. I love how committed Ryan is to his Pantone-perfected yellow hair and beach babe tan, even while promoting a hardcore action movie.

Gosling, who plays a lone assassin and former CIA agent in the Netflix film, is fully embracing Barbiecore in a uniquely-masculine-slash-Ken way – a symphony of pastel coloured greens vaguely reminiscent of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. – Rebecca Wadey

Best pavement moment

Lizzo’s on-stage looks have been outrageously good lately – lilac feathers, a sparkling pink catsuit, blue metallic flares – but this casual moment in a T-shirt and cropped track pants caught my eye. She looks cool, no doubt, but I think what it really conveys is that confidence (and fun) is what really makes a great outfit. She was photographed leaving a studio in New York and used the short distance between door to car to really give a performance. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

Best crotchless appearance on the red carpet

Europe faced record-breaking temperatures this week, but Brad Pitt took it all in his A-list stride, swapping out the traditional sweltering suit for an easy-breezy beautiful brown linen skirt to wear to the Berlin premiere of his new film Bullet Train. He kept the breathable natural fibre thing going with the rest of the look too, adding in a matching jacket and a salmon shirt left half-open, presumably for maximum airflow.

The ensemble comes from the mastermind of Haans Nicholas Mott, who has dressed Pitt in a series of surprisingly playful linen looks for the entirety of his Bullet Train press tour. Or perhaps that should be unsurprising: Pitt’s return to the skirt revived our collective consciousness of his 1999 Rolling Stone shoot to promote Fight Club where he wore no less than six incredible mini dresses. – Tyson Beckett

I have to hand it to Gigi Hadid: the woman knows how to wear neon. Dressed in Self-Portrait at the British Vogue x Self-Portrait Summer Party in London, she’s giving… Fiona from Shrek meets Tinkerbell. I’m into it. – Lara Daly

This Thom Browne school uniform-inspired look is perfect on Yara Shahidi, who’s a recent graduate from Harvard University (Michelle Obama famously wrote her recommendation letter). I’m super into the layers of hard vs soft, sheer vs opaque. And the styling (I assume by her longtime collaborator Jason Bolden) with the shoes and socks is edgy and playful all at the same time. – RW

Best reminder of summer

Jennifer Lawrence in this lovely plaid, pleated day dress by US designer Tory Burch really has me pining for humidity and heat; the type of weather where you can just chuck on a dress and that be your whole look. But I think mostly, I’m drawn to the whole summery vibe of her very long hair and makeup free face. – ZWA
