The crime fighting duo – Emu & the chef

England has two new, unexpected celebrities – a 42-year-old chef and a massive emu, who inadvertently teamed up to help catch a driver who fled a crash scene, the Washington Post reports.

Dean Wade, a chef at Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury, England saw a “drunk” driver, who caused a crash after narrowly missing pedestrians and causing extensive damage, fleeing the scene and decided to chase him across the town.

The 20-minute chase came to an end when the driver ended up in Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary and that’s where the real confrontation began.

Ignoring the advice of Wade, the driver had entered an emu’s pen where he was pecked repeatedly by a mother emu, enabling Wade to flag down a nearby police car.

Following Wade and the emu’s successful partnership in catching the driver, the hotel and the animal sanctuary have also teamed up – striking a deal that sees staff deliver bucket loads of vegetable peelings from the kitchen to the animals each day in a bid to reduce food waste.

But for Australian Nedd Brockmann it is a way of helping people struggling with homelessness by raising A$1 million (NZ$1.1m) for charity We Are Mobilise.

When Brockmann moved from the rural town of Forbes to Sydney, Australia, he was struck by the number of people living rough. “It was quite overwhelming, confronting. I wanted to help out,” he told ABC News.

Brockmann is planning to start his charity run on September 1 from Perth’s Cottlesloe Beach and cover a distance almost of 4000km to reach Sydney in fewer than 43 days.

This is the second time that Brockmann has attempted a charity run as he ran 50 marathons in 50 days back in 2020 to raise A$100,000 for the Red Cross.
