Palmside St is one of the streets where the Christchurch City Council has approved lowering the speed limit due to the Nor’West Arc cycleway.

Speed limits will be lowered from 50kph to 30kph on 11 streets in the Christchurch suburbs of Hoon Hay and Lower Cashmere.

The Christchurch City Council approved the change at its meeting on July 28 and the new speed limits would come into effect once the appropriate signs and road markings had been added, expected to be by mid-September.

It affects Palmside St, Woodbank St, Karaka Place, Paikea Place, Ferniehurst St, Molesworth Place, Greenpark St, Muirson Ave, McBeath Ave, Smartlea St and Weir Place.

“The Nor’West Arc major cycle route runs through these residential streets so for safety reasons we are lowering the speed limit,” council transport operations manager Stephen Wright said.

“This will make the roads safer for everyone – pedestrians and cyclists.”

The vast majority of submitters supported the move, he said.

“A lot of young families and older residents live in the area so most people saw the benefits of the lower speed limit and thought it would make the area safer.’’

Several submitters suggested other streets that would lalso benefit from having a lower speed limit, and those suggestions would be considered by the council as part of its safer neighbourhood speeds programme, Wright said.
