The South Taranaki District Council has changed the way it gives out money to community projects.

The new Community Initiatives Fund, or CIF, replaces the previous system where groups had to apply for money during the council’s Long-Term and Annual Plan processes.

In a statement, group manager of community and infrastructure services Fiona Aitken said organisations could apply for funds from the CIF each year from July and would be allocated grants from a set pool of money

The fund is designed to support community initiatives and activities that will make positive contributions to the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of the community.

“Applicants should also see this as a complementary funding source not a primary one, and priority may be given to applicants who can demonstrate they are seeking other sources of funding,” she said.

“This year the Fund has $67,460 available to distribute (from an original pool of approximately $240,000) due to previous grants being allocated over a three-year period.”
