The remains of an infant woolly mammoth have been found by miners in a Canadian goldfield.

It’s believed the one-month-old mammoth, found in permafrost in the Klondike goldfields in Yukon, is over 30,000 years old.

Researchers said it was extremely rare to discover such an old fossil with skin and hair preserved.

“As an Ice Age palaeontologist, it has been one of my life long dreams to come face to face with a real woolly mammoth,” Dr Grant Zazula said.

“That dream came true today.”

The little mammoth was nicknamed “Nun cho ga” by local First Nations elders, meaning “big baby animal”.

“Nun cho ga is beautiful and one of the most incredible mummified ice age animals ever discovered in the world,” Zazula said.
