Protesters threaten to disrupt cities – صحيفة الصوت

Police will monitor protesters who say they are planning to disrupt Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch traffic on Saturday.

The Freedoms & Rights Coalition – a Destiny Church linked group – on Friday said it planned to unite with ‘Convoy 2022’, which was planning to meet in the major centres from 9am, 10am, and 11am.

They planned to meet at Wellington’s Civic Square, at Auckland’s Domain, and Christchurch’s Bridge of Remembrance, reportedly with plans to ‘slow roll’ down Auckland’s southern motorway, and march down Wellington’s quays.

A press release suggested they planned to “cause a major public interruption and disruption”.

They were opposing violence, the cost of living, and a stressed health system.

A witness at Wellington’s Civic Square said about 100 people had gathered, but no police were on site. In Christchurch, another 100 or so had gathered.

A police spokesperson said police “are monitoring the potential for protest activity”.

“Police recognise the public’s right to protest peacefully and lawfully.”

Wellington police advised drivers to avoid the area around Frank Kitts Park and the Railway Station, where they understood protesters were planning to march between from 11am.

“Police will be present to ensure the safety of all. Motorists should avoid the area, if possible.”
