Police are investigating a ramraid overnight in Auckland’s Botany.

A Noel Leeming store in east Auckland has been ramraided overnight.

Police said a car had smashed into the Botany store on Wednesday about 10pm, damaging the store front.

Metal bars prevented the vehicle going further in and nothing was stolen.

The Noel Leeming was boarded up on Thursday morning and a sign on the front said the shop would be closed for the day.

A spokesperson for Botany Town Centre confirmed there was an attempted break-in.

Police Minister Poto Williams announces $6m will go towards installing bollards, alarms and fog cannons in stores to combat ramraids.

“Police and security were made aware of the incident and immediately attended the site to manage the situation.”

Customer and staff safety was a priority, they said.

There was no police presence at the scene on Thursday, but a mall guard was in attendance.

Police inquiries were ongoing.

This is not the first time Botany shopping centres have been targeted.

Earlier this month, another Botany Town Centre store was the target of a burglary.

Police received reports of two men entered the shop, taking several items and escaping in a car.

A public meeting in May revealed roughly 200 children were doing most of the ram raid damage across Auckland.

“We’re constantly watching what young people are putting up on social media, people glorify themselves not just ram-raiding, but doing things like police pursuits,” police area commander Jim Wilson previously said.

Despite this, criminologists said they worried increasing penalties and detaining young people only embedded their behaviour further.
