From stunning new houses and renovations to social housing, urban landscapes and a seriously cool transport hub, the 2022 Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA Auckland Architecture Awards reveal architecture in Auckland and Northland is in great shape.
Jury convenor Belinda George of Belinda George Architects said the jury was thrilled with this year’s projects: “Despite the travails of a pandemic and a severely stressed building sector, it is abundantly evident that architecture is alive and thriving in the Auckland region.”
Stand-out projects include Mahuika on Waiheke Island, by Daniel Marshall Architect, which won one of 12 Housing Awards. The jury describes Mahuika as a “self-sufficient holiday house” that occupies a steep, narrow site running down to Waikopou Bay.
In step with this topography, its long linear form culminates in a bold cantilevered living space poised between bush and sea, and out over a pool and stream beyond.

“A glass pavilion allows sunlight in where an original house, deteriorated beyond repair, once stood. Now in a bush clearing, the new house is surrounded by a reforesting of the property and a fostering of bird life.”
Herbst Architects have two Housing Award winners – Rangiputa Bach on the Karikari Peninsula, and Matapouri Beach House. The jury says Rangiputa Bach “beautifully mixes holiday routines with the vastness of sky and sea”.
“Despite its striking simplicity–a screened box set above a glazed enclosure–the bach builds in a nuanced range of spatial connections and adjustable elements. With bedrooms and bathrooms above bathed in striated light from timber screens, the glazed living space below plays out varying degrees of reflected sun and ocean light, sea breeze and glazed shelter.”
Studio John Irving also has two Housing Award winners – The Dart, as its name suggests, is a clever dart-shaped house at Mangawhai Heads. And Sandiland is a large beach house as nearby Te Arai, designed for a client who wanted a house feeling like “a giant hug”. And the firm won a Small Project Award for The Tent, a fitness and wellness centre.
Architect Pete Bossley’s own home received a Housing – Alterations and Additions Award. The firm also received a Housing Award for Clifftops House in Auckland, and a Hospitality Award for Park Hyatt Hotel.
Pac Studio won two awards – a Housing Award with Steven Lloyd Architecture for Crinkle Cut House, and a Housing – Alterations and Additions Award for Split House. And Guy Tarrant Architects also scored twice with a Housing Award for Coxs Bay House and a Housing – Alterations and Additions Award for Townhouse.
Jack McKinney Architects took out a Housing – Alterations and Additions Award for the Under Ivy project (see below) and a Hospitality Award for the Alma restaurant fit-out.
TOA Architects won one of two Housing – Multi Unit Awards for the Kōtukutuku Kāinga community housing project in Ōtara. The jury says this project rises to the challenge of securing a place for a community sector more accustomed to disparity.
“The complex beautifully integrates individual dwellings, a shared courtyard and collective gardens, a large whānau space and a whare manaaki. Arrived at through a collaboration between architects, artists, craftspeople and a broader community kaupapa, it showcases participatory design in the celebration of culture and place.”
And the Auckland City Mission’s new Hobson Street building, HomeGround by Stevens Lawson Architects, is described as a true labour of love. Belinda George says the project, which received a Public Architecture Award, demonstrates a fund-raising acumen and careful spend that will deliver over time a remaking of lives and a revitalisation of this part of the city.
“It’s so heartening to see a facility of this kind for Auckland, one that is absolutely rich in social possibility, architecture, heritage and urbanism. It showcases a compelling vision and ethos for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland – it is aroha literally made solid.”
Stevens Lawson Architects also won a Housing – Multi Unit Award for the Sunderland Terrace project at Hobsonville Point.
Puhinui Station Interchange by Jasmax is another stand-out project. “A sweeping roofscape smooths the transition from trackside to the ticketing hall, in turn easing the up and over transition to the buses which are temporarily still at the street level,” the jury says. “The sculptural roof form offers a landmark for the neighbourhood and a sign for the communities future.
Jasmax also won an Interior Architecture award for MC Workplace Fit-Out, and a Hospitality Award for QT Hotel. And Warren and Mahoney won two Interior Architectures awards – for Colliers Head Office and Buddle Findlay fit-outs.
RTA Studio won two awards – a Housing Award for Fale Marker on Great Barrier Island, and an Education Award for Manurewa High School Business Hub.
