A New South Wales couple are reeling after their beloved pet greyhound was mauled to death by NRL star Jai Arrow’s dog.
John and Karen Gowan are demanding answers after their 11-year-old dog Ruby was attacked by Arrow’s American Staffordshire terrier Thor just 100 metres from their Bateau Bay home, on the Central Coast, earlier this month.
Gowan was walking Ruby on his street when Thor bolted out of a home and latched on to the greyhound, leaving Ruby with a punctured thorax, dislocated jaw and multiple deep cuts.
“This other dog was just on her like a flash,” Gowan said.
“I didn’t see it coming, I couldn’t protect her, I couldn’t do anything.”
Ruby was rushed to the nearest vet but could not be saved.
Thor has already been deemed “dangerous” by Waverly Council after mauling another dog in April at Bronte Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
The dog was seriously injured and its owner was left with a $10,000 vet bill, which Arrow covered.
“I just want him to be made accountable for this,” Mr Gowan told NBN.
“I mean he had to pay $10,000 in vet bills down in Sydney, what is a dead dog worth?”
In an email to the Gowans, Arrow offered help and said Thor had been staying with his sister.
“I’m reaching out to try and make things as easy as possible,” the email read.
Waverly Council said it was not aware the dog had been moved to the Central Coast.
“I just don’t understand… If things had been done properly in Waverly my dog would be alive,” Gowan said.
Arrow has been contacted but his lawyer said he declined to comment.
Central Coast Council is investigating the attack and is holding Thor.
