Deputy Commissioner Allan Adams said police received multiple calls at 4.15am relating to the man’s behaviour.

“When police arrived the 20-year-old ran from the address armed with weapons in his hands, the initial response was to taser, which was ineffective,” he said.

“As the person approached police, a decision was made to use fire-arm force.

“The man was in possession of two knives while running at police.”

Adams said one officer attended the incident and deployed a taser, before firing a single shot to the man’s torso.

He said the situation, “evolved very quickly”.

“Upon that shot being fired, police automatically conducted life-saving first aid to the person,” Dep Comm Adams said.

“From the moment, the young man walked out the front time to the time the event happened was a matter of seconds. It happened very quickly.”
