The knockout rounds beckon for the New Zealand men’s and women’s rugby sevens sides in Birmingham, while the medal prospects continue at the pool and velodrome on day two of competition.
Sarah Hirini’s Black Ferns Sevens, and their male counterparts led by Sam Dickson, both face England in their final group matches on Saturday which will determine their opponents later in the evening. Both teams had a comfortable stroll through day one.
The women’s semifinals are set to get under way at 6.42am Sunday (NZT), and the men’s quarterfinals at 7.26am, before the medals are contested early on Monday (NZT).
At the pool, New Zealand’s best-performed swimmer Lewis Clareburt eyes his specialist 400m medley (heats at 10.37pm, final at 7.49am) where he’ll look to go two better than his bronze four years ago.
At the London velodrome, the gold medal-winning men’s team pursuiters and women’s team sprinters back up in the individual events with genuine medal chances while the speedy Bryony Botha is a leading contender in the women’s individual pursuit.
Captain Sophie Devine and her White Ferns play their first match on women’s cricket’s first appearance at a Commonwealth Games, and it’s a tough one against South Africa. The Silver Ferns and Blacks Sticks women cap off day two with what should be more one-sided group matches.
