Armed police rushed to Panmure, east Auckland, on Friday night after a man was shot.

The brother of a man shot several times in east Auckland said he saw “a hole in his chest”.

Four St John ambulances and about a dozen police cars rushed to a firearms incident in Auckland’s Panmure on Friday evening.

Jason Doctor said his brother had just got home when someone shot him.

Doctor was asleep at the time, but woke to his brother banging on the bedroom door and screaming.

Doctor said his brother was shot “three or four times” in the abdomen, including in the stomach and once in the chest.

He said St John told them to grab a clean towel and apply pressure to the wounds.

The injured brother went and waited outside the house, while Doctor talked to two teenagers who were inside the house.

There are at least a dozen police cars on the scene, a Stuff reporter said.

Doctor said his brother left in a police car.

“He looked like he was about to fall over, but he managed to stay standing.”

“I feel bloody awful because he could die tonight,” he said.

Police confirmed they responded to a report of gunshot sounds coming from an address in Panmure at about 7.20pm on Friday evening.

“One person was located with moderate injuries and has been taken to hospital,” a police spokesperson said.

Police are continuing their investigation, and no arrests have yet been made.

A St John spokesperson confirmed ambulances were called to Benghazi Rd, Panmure, and medics attended to a patient who was in a moderate condition.

One neighbour said he heard four gunshots.

“I knew right away it was a gunshot,” he said.

A local Panmure businessman said he saw flashing lights from a police car driving past at 7pm.

Friday’s incident is the latest in a string of shootings in Auckland, and the second this week alone.

On Monday, a man was shot by police in Auckland’s Grey Lynn, after he fired shots at what police believe was his own house.

Last Friday, on July 15, two people and a dog were fatally shot in Glendene.
