As someone who packed in their warehouse for a few months, I get your concern. In the end workers get very little time to pack each order but only 6 types of cardboard boxes. Sure, you can shrink them a bit by cutting the flaps, but that takes time and risks damage to the box and products. Still, a certain amount of Airbags is necessary to give the boxes structural stability: In the end they get stacked in the cargo bus. Only with airbags a delicate item can stand being underneath a TV or weightlifting weight. For that reason, I think they are a necessary evil to allow mail order as we do it right now. As long as we would recycle the plastic, it would not even be so bad as it is comparably little material in each airbag.
