Hutt City is bike city, after winning the Breakthrough Bike City Award at the Local Government New Zealand conference in Palmerston North.
Mayor Campbell Barry said the award was an honour which “signals Lower Hutt is on the right track with enabling cycling as a credible alternative mode of transport”.
“Cycling in the Hutt is becoming more and more common, and we want to see it increase. Getting more people cycling through the city is key to addressing climate change, creating healthier communities, and reducing congestion. This is a key focus and priority for the Council,” he said.

After major investment by council and Government, there are now 93km of cycleways and shared pathways in Hutt City.

Work will start next month on the 4.4km Tupua Horo Nuku shared pathway between Point Howard and Eastbourne.
The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency board has approved a total of $311.9m in funding for Te Ara Tupua, a 4.5km section of 5-metre-wide pathway for walking and biking from Ngāūranga to Petone, along the coast next to the Hutt Valley railway line and the highway.
