I heard that guys with long hair and into “alternative” looks (metal, grunge, punk etc) can get harassed by locals and even the police in Switzerland. I’d like to know whether that’s true in this day and age.

I grew up in one of the Baltic states, an ex-Soviet country, and was aware that there was a problem in that respect (for example, one with long hair had a better chance of getting beaten up by drunkern thugs on a Friday night). I always thought that stemmed from the remnants of the Soviet culture where being into rock music pretty much discredited one in the eyes of the society. It has gotten WAY better in the last 15 years over there, to the point where I wouldn’t worry about it at all (although not quite the US level of absolute acceptance, though), just maybe stay away from places you know there’s thugs on a Friday night.

I’ve been living in London the last 5 years, working in the tech industry, and had completely forgotten that long hair could ever be a problem.

So I was surprised to hear that about Switzerland, and now I just want to understand the extent to which it’s true in this day and age?
