Gone by Monday: Six crowd-pleasing movies leaving Netflix at the end of July – صحيفة الصوت

While there are daily drops of new material on Netflix, everything from crazy reality shows to classic rom-coms, there’s also a constant churn of content dropping off the global streaming service.

So although you might think a movie or TV show will be available to watch on there forever, the truth is that’s very much not the case, some only available for a few months at a time.

In order to assist those keen to get the most out of their subscription, and in order to help with your viewing priorities, Stuff to Watch has come up with a list of six super movies that won’t be around come Monday morning – so catch them while you can.

The Adventures of Tintin (2011)

Steven Spielberg and our own wizards of Weta Digital combined magnificently to bring to life Herge’s beloved, intrepid boy reporter.

Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Toby Jones, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Daniel Craig are among those on both vocal and performance capture duties for this rollicking tale that draws inspiration from three tales: 1941’s The Crab With The Golden Claws, 1943’s The Secret Of The Unicorn and 1944’s Red Rackham’s Treasure.

The first non-Pixar movie to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, fans have been waiting a decade so far for the long-promised Sir Peter Jackson-directed follow-up.

“[It] comes at you in a whoosh, like a volcano full of creative ideas in full eruption … It hits home for the kid in all of us who wants to bust out and run free,” wrote Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers.

Jumanji (1995)

Long before Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart rebooted the franchise for modern audiences, Robin Williams and Bonnie Hunt headlined this tale based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 picture book about a board game that comes to life.

Also providing an early role for Kirsten Dunst, it featured some spectacular set-pieces that combined animatronics and puppetry with visual effects from Industrial Light and Magic.

“A visually impressive and exhilarating adventure that keeps the suspense, thrills and comedy running high through the surprising end and supplies interesting characters with moving plights,” wrote Boxoffice’s Christine James.

Just Go With It (2011)

When it was first proposed, the idea of bringing together the most famous former Friends star with Hollywood’s most grating man-child was about as appealing a cleaning a Portaloo – especially based on their recent form. However, the result was a surprisingly entertaining rom-com.

Sure, this tale of Adam Sandler’s supposedly lovelorn plastic surgeon persuading Jennifer Aniston’s cynical co-worker to poses as his “soon-to-be-divorced wife” is filled with copious, odious amounts of sexism (there’s more cleavage on display than a butchery competition), multiple blows to the groin and prosthetics galore, but there’s something about this Couples Retreat/Forgetting Sarah Marshall/The Heartbreak Kid-hybrid that just clicks.

Freed of his regular sidekicks Kevin James and Rob Schneider, Sandler is at his most charming, while his chemistry with Aniston is almost as good as what he generates with Drew Barrymore.

Spy Kids (2001)

Having entertained adults with such visual and visceral delights as Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn, kinetic, frenetic film-maker Robert Rodriguez turned his attention to more family-friendly fare with this action-comedy that has so far spawned three sequels and a TV series.

Clearly influenced by the Moore and Brosnan-era James Bond movies, this is the story of retired agents Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid Cortez (Caral Gugino), who are called back into service – and instantly captured. Now it is up to their children Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) to rescue them.

Alan Cumming, Robert Patrick, Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, Tony Shalhoub and Teri Hatcher also feature.

Star Trek (2009)

After breathing new life – and credibility – into the Mission: Impossible movies, as well as creating TV hits Felicity, Alias and Lost, J J Abrams seemed like the perfect man to reboot this then 40-year-old franchise, which had been dormant for the best part of a decade.

Along with writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, he did a good job of melding the past and present. Sure, like Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk, they cheat a little – a touch of time travel explaining away this altered reality from the original TV series – but this is still a Trek story where a Red Shirt dies, Kirk wrestles and seduces in equal measure, and Bones gets to say, “Are you out of your Vulcan mind?”, while technological advances make everything that much more shiny and whizzy.

The impressive ensemble includes Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin and our own Karl Urban.

World War Z (2013)

The highest-grossing zombie film of all-time, this adaptation of Max Brooks’ 2006 novel of the same name impressed with its scale and urgency, a perfect blend of global thriller, action movie and full-tilt horror.

Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who travels the world gathering clues to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic from completely taking over the world. Mirelle Enos, Matthew Fox, David Morse, Ruth Negga and John Gordon Sinclair are among the supporting cast.

“Hits the blockbuster equivalent of a delicate balance: gargantuan spectacle with a human touch,” wrote The Orange County Register’s Michael Sragow.
