The former-boyfriend of a German backpacker has arrived in Sydney after being extradited to face charges over her death.
Tobias Moran, formerly known as Tobias Suckfuell, had been travelling around Australia with Simone Strobel in 2005 before her body was found under palm fronds less than 100 metres from the Lismore caravan park where she was last seen at six days earlier.
The 25-year-old school teacher had allegedly been suffocated with a pillow or plastic bag.
Moran was arrested in Perth yesterday in relation Strobel’s death.
NSW Police applied for his extradition to face charges linked to Strobel’s death but are yet to formally disclose the nature of his charges.
Strobel’s alleged murder has remained unsolved despite the establishment of a strike force and the NSW government offering a $1 million reward in 2020.
Her family expressed shock yesterday after learning of the arrest.
“We cannot believe it,” Strobels’ father Gustl told German media.
Strobel had been on a night out with Moran and friends when she was last seen at the Lismore Tourist Caravan Park on February 11, 2005.
Her body was found six days later, at a sports ground less than 100 metres from the caravan park.
Authorities in Germany also offered a reward in 2014 of €10,000 to German and Australian residents with any information about Strobel’s death.
