Washouts have cut off access to the Lake Ōhau and Aoraki/Mt Cook villages trapping residents and school holiday makers.

The only access to Lake Ōhau Village was washed out Tuesday morning.

Village resident Barbara MacKay didn’t know she was trapped until she came across the washed out bridge.

“There are a lot of people here at their holiday homes and people staying for the school holidays,” she said.

“My husband and I have lived here for 20 years and this is the first time we have seen the bridge washed out.”

A slip caused by floodwaters from the heavy rain in the area has also closed State Highway 80 into Aoraki/Mt Cook Village.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said SH80 was closed by a slip between Ben Ohau and Mount Cook.
