England players celebrate winning the European Championship final at Wembley.

England have won their first major football trophy for 56 years after their national women’s team beat Germany in extra-time of the European Championships final.

Playing before a capacity crowd at Wembley Stadium, England won 2-1 with Chloe Kelly netting the winner in the 111th minute on Sunday (Monday NZ time).

It was England’s first major trophy since their men’s team won the World Cup final in 1966, beating West Germany 4-2.

Ella Toone fired England into the lead with a 62-minute goal. But Lena Magull equalised for Germany in the 79th minute to send the game into extra-time.
