Ellesse Andrews celebrates after taking out the women’s keirin final.

Ellesse Andrews has become just the third New Zealander to win three gold medals at one Commonwealth Games after hanging on for another dominant victory in the women’s keirin.

Starting from fourth wheel, Andrews surged to the front with two laps to go in the final and could not be caught, showing incredible power to hold off England’s Sophie Capewell and Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell to claim her third win at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

Andrews won a silver medal in the keirin at the Tokyo Olympics last year. Her other two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games were won in the team sprint and sprint events. She also helped the pursuit team claim a silver medal.

The 22-year-old is just the third New Zealander to strike gold three times at one Commonwealth Games after Gary Anderson in 1990 and Yvette Williams in 1954.

“I’m so overwhelmed,” Andrews told Sky Sport.

“I came here wanting to do my absolute best and leave everything out on the track, but I never could have imagined this would be the final outcome.”

Earlier Michaela Drummond won silver in the 10km scratch race.

Team-mate Bryony Botha crashed out halfway through after colliding with Indian rider Meenakshi, who had to be stretchered off, but was said to be conscious and responding to those treating her.

New Zealand has now won 11 medals in cycling, including a record seven golds, surpassing the six golds they won in Glasgow in 2014, with mountainbiking and road cycling still to come.
