One of the Lyttelton residents – who did not want to be named – was at home when the slip happened. “It was a bit of a shock. I could hear the trees cracking first.”
Next thing she knew, more than a metre of mud had slid from the hill behind the property down to her bathroom window, taking a fence and a patch of grassy slope with it.
She was impressed with the firefighters and their quick response. Crews had made a temporary canal out of tarpaulins to divert mud and water away from the houses. They were going to stay with family tonight, she said.
“It hit the house, but it seems alright… It’ll depend on what happens tonight.”
The landslide occurred after Christchurch received a month’s worth of rainfall in the 24 hours to lunchtime on Tuesday.
MetService meteorologist John Law said about 36mm of rain had fallen in Lyttelton in the past 24 hours, with more to come.
The town and surrounding area was past the worst of the rainfall but could expect some further wet spells, he said.
