Some Wellington commuters are so desperate to get home, they are approaching people in the bus queue to car pool using Uber.
Wellington commuters are facing a chaotic rush-hour after a day of stormy weather.
Three Metlink train routes are being replaced by buses as the weather causes delays – but the replacements are taking a while to show up.
The queue for Hutt Valley line bus replacements stretched back to the Wellington Station entrance, as commuters attempted to get home through Metlink’s alternative transport options. Some commuters were so desperate to get home, they were approaching people in the bus queue to carpool using Uber.
Limited capacity is available and commuters should seek alternative transport where possible, Metlink said on its website.
Roads were also affected by the weather, with access to Eastbourne limited by heavy swells and debris covering the road. Marine Drive is now open but the Hutt City Council is urging motorists take extreme care and to avoid if at all possible.

The catamaran was pounded against the road in Eastbourne in Wellington’s eastern bays.
“There is currently a lot of debris on the road; they are clearing away large logs, rocks, etc to the side of the road to provide, in some cases, single lane access,” a council spokesperson said.
East by West ferries – usually the alternative route to the road – were cancelled too. Staff at the station advised commuters: “while the buses are coming, it might be faster to ring someone to come and pick [them] up”.

Harsh winter weather breaks into Lowry Bay, in Eastbourne, blocking roads with rocks and parts of trees.
There was a major slip on Lennel Rd, the major route into Wadestown, and the Wellington City Council advised people to take alternative routes if possible.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advised motorists throughout the region to drive to the conditions, take extra care and plan ahead.
Advisories showed highways were affected by slips, with State Highway 53 from Martinborough to Featherston under 30kph stop-go traffic management. State Highway 58 was also under traffic management due to a slip, near the Pauatahanui intersection with Bradley Rd.

Big chunks have been taken out of the road to Ngawi, Wairarapa.
Extensive surface flooding has affected parts of South Wairarapa near Martinborough. Lake Ferry road was closed in the morning due to flooding but recently reopened. Cape Palliser Road is now closed from the DOC station, due to high swells on the South Wairarapa coast.
Metservice’s contact centre is also currently experiencing technical difficulties due to their phone lines being down. Wellington Electricity said more than than 1800 customers are without power currently.
The airport is being affected by the weather too, with all flights cancelled and passengers queueing up in droves to speak to Air New Zealand service staff.
