Canterbury artist Hannah Kidd’s new show features seven sleeping dogs sculpted from her trademark recycled roofing tin, along with a series of brightly coloured ceramic artworks emblazoned with Instagram cats, Vladimir Putin and pink flamingos.

The new show, called Southern Comfort, runs at the Central Art Gallery in Christchurch until August 28.

Kidd, who is well known for her distinctive and often comedic tin sculptures that capture everyday life, said the title of the show was the starting point for the 14 new artworks.

“Everything sprung from that title,’’ she said.

“It is about our comfortable isolation at the bottom of the South Pacific. How we can choose to dip in and out of what is going on in the world. It is about our middle class comfort.

“I think we are a bunch of middle class brats, fairly oblivious to what is going on.”

All the dog sculpture are lying down on rugs and are partly inspired by her pet dog Basil.

“I always look at him curled up by the fire and think you look lovely and comfortable.”

The new ceramic artworks stand on plinths.

“It is quite a dramatic looking show.

“There is nothing on the walls.”

Kidd said she branched out into ceramic artworks after moving into a larger art studio.

The colourful designs on the ceramic urns feature everything from Vladimir Putin on horseback, to Instagram cats, and social media messages about missing dogs to racecourse spectator stands.

“I make it up as I go along. I thoroughly enjoy it.”

Each urn is displayed on its own tin stand, in reference to her trademark style.

“They are ceramics, but with a bit of tin so people don’t freak out too much.”
