EUGENE, Ore.—Andre De Grasse’s streak is over.

The 27-year-old from Markham had won a medal in every world or Olympic 100- and 200-metre race he’d ever entered, going back to the 2015 world championships.

But Saturday night, De Grasse — who was battling COVID-19 just a few weeks ago — failed to advance out of the 100-metre semifinals at the world track and field championships. He finished fifth in his heat in 10.21 seconds.

“It’s been a challenging year for me after coming off a great, successful Olympics,” De Grasse said the night before, referring to the COVID bout and an early-season foot injury.

Later, he said he plans to run the 4×100-metre relay, but might pass on the 200.

Teammate Aaron Brown made the 100-metre final and finished eighth behind American winner Fred Kerley.

Canadian Andre de Grasse, left, saw his medal streak in the 100 metres at the world championships come to an end in Saturday night’s semifinals in Eugene, Ore.
