Brownsons Jewellers in Royal Oak Shopping Mall was robbed on Thursday.

Four people have been arrested after allegedly robbing a store, then trying to sell stolen jewels to the wholesaler who supplied it.

It comes amid a spate of jewellery store robberies across Auckland, including several at Michael Hill stores in broad daylight.

Brownsons Jewellers in Royal Oak Shopping Centre was robbed about 3.15pm on Thursday.

Three men entered the store and began smashing cabinets, the owner said.

Owner Jay Raniga said the men shouted at the five staff and one customer onsite, who hid in the store’s office. The thieves then began to smash the cabinets and steal jewellery.

The three men then left the store and got in a car driven by a fourth person.

Raniga hadn’t totalled up how much had been stolen but said “the bracelets they have got hold of would be worth $8000 to $10,000 each”.

Shortly afterwards, four people arrived at a jewellery wholesaler in Mt Eden with some goods to sell.

However, the wholesaler recognised the jewels as he had supplied them to Raniga.

Raniga then called the police.

“Police have subsequently received reports of a male at a Mt Eden commercial premises attempting to sell items of jewellery at around 5pm and officers have attended,” a police spokesperson said.

Four people were arrested and were set to appear in court on Friday.

Another Brownsons Jewellers shop, in Meadowbank Shopping Centre, was robbed earlier in July by two people armed with guns. A woman in her 70s tried to stop the thieves by jumping on one of them, a witness said.
